Mt. Edith Cavell Reflected

Mount Edith Cavell stands over 3,300 m high and is the mountain with the greatest prominence (height above surrounding landscape) of any peak in Alberta at over 2,000 m. This mountain was named after a heroic nurse who served and died in WWI. Mt Edith Cavell is located in Jasper National Park and is found at the head of an incredible trail into the Tonquin Valley, located a day's hike to the west of this peak.

On this early July morning, Mark was lucky enough to find Edith Cavell shrouded in clouds left over after days of rain and unsettled weather. Here, the storm had broken and the skies were clearing as the sun began to illuminate the mountain and its reflection in Cavell Lake.

A few minutes before taking this shot, Mark had accidentally dropped his prime wide angle lens into the lake, which meant that he had to shoot this scene with a narrower lens than usual, using a multi-shot panorama technique. Shooting with the narrow lens actually enhanced the way that the mountain and its reflection sat in the frame, making for a better shot than may have been possible with the wider lens. It was unfortunate to lose an expensive lens, but it was serendipitous to capture this composition as a result of using the narrower model. A lucky accident!

Available on archival canvas, which has been Giclée printed by the artist using archival Canon pigment inks. The print is guaranteed to hold its vivid colors for over 100 years (note that displaying the print in direct sunlight may shorten print life).
